Internship for Credit 101

Anderson Career Services staff is ready to help you find an internship, explain the process for receiving 3 hours of academic credit for your internship and help you maximize your experience!

Internship for credit can be pursued for either concentration credit or free elective credit. Concentration credit can be pursued to apply towards remaining concentration electives. Free Elective credit can apply towards remaining free electives needed to complete the student's degree program.

Internship Requirements and Policies

  • An important element that distinguishes an internship from a short-term job or volunteer work is that an intentional "learning agenda" is structured into the experience.
  • To allow for adequate job development, students should begin the internship process at least one semester prior to the semester in which they intend to participate.
  • Intern must work at least 160 hours during the semester to receive 3-hour course credit.
  • Intern must have successfully completed at least six (6) credit hours of prior concentration coursework for the internship to count for concentration credit.
  • The internship must be related to the student's concentration area.
  • Students are required to register for the internship for credit course (either MGMT 497/MGMT 697) once approved in order to receive credit.

Specific Concentration Requirements

Accounting

Accounting internships can only count towards free elective credit.

General Concentration/No Concentration

BBA

To be considered for concentration credit, students must select a concentration area that best aligns to his or her internship. Concentration credit can only be applied to concentration area that a student has not completed. Concentration credit cannot be pursued for accounting or marketing.

Accelerated MBA

To be considered for a management elective, the internship must be similar or align to one of the specific concentration areas in the MBA program even if the student does not have a declared concentration. Concentration credit cannot be pursued for accounting or marketing.

Marketing

BBA

  • 3.5 Cumulative GPA
  • Completed 6 hours of Marketing classes beyond the core including MGMT481 or MGMT435 with B or better in each class
  • The standard expectation is that the internship will be paid.

MBA

  • 3.5 Cumulative GPA
  • Completed 6 hours of Marketing classes beyond the core
  • Completed minimum of 15 hours in MBA curriculum (waived classes may not be included in count)
  • The standard expectation is that the internship will be paid.
